Lingerie FAQs

What do the bra measurement letters and numbers mean?

There are actually two measurements in any bra. The first is a number, which is the band size. To get your band size, you should measure the area of the rib cage just beneath the breasts. It is a firm measurement, meaning the tape should be snug and taught.

The second measurement is cup size. This is taken by subtracting the band measurement from the bust measurement. A bust measurement is taken at the fullest portion of the breast and is a loose circumference of the chest. The difference is assigned a letter. For instance A stands for a 1 inch differential, B for a two inch, and so on. It is estimated that up to 80% of all woman are wearing the wrong bra size, primarily because they misunderstand the measurements or have never had theirs taken.

Why are all the terms so strangely spelled and pronounced?

The terminology that comes with lingerie may seem strange to many English speaking people, and that shouldn’t surprise you. The term lingerie is French for garment, and the first lingerie items were simply that, things to wear. They pioneered much of the terminology we use today for lingerie, including the bra, or brasserie to give the full name. So if you notice gratuitous amounts of silent consonants in the verbiage, you now know how they got there.

What should I keep in mind when shopping for the woman in my life?

The first thing that most men forget is that many lingerie items are uncomfortable. Try to think about how it would feel to wear something that sucks your gut in three or four inches and holds your chest tightly. It’s difficult to breathe, much less do anything else in! So when shopping, try to find something that’s comfortable. They aren’t always the raciest items, but if you’re buying lingerie as a gift for her, and not for yourself, try thinking of her first. The other thing to keep in mind is that most women are very size conscious. This means that you need to get the sizing on your garments right… the first time! Buy too big and you’ll be sending the message that you think she’s overweight. Buy something that’s too small however and she’ll feel like she’s not living up to your image of her. So when lingerie shopping, exercise caution.
